I thought I ordered the CD, but it came in a big, square box with all sorts of heat warnings and fragile notifications. I just assumed it was an oversized box to protect the CD , but no, I’d ordered it on vinyl. I guess I finally have a reason to break out that USB turntable that’s been sitting around for some time now. I can’t get to it anytime soon, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to get my fix of jazz oboe...

This is an upside, not a downside. You now have the album on vinyl. This is a good thing.
Rip to flac or your preferred bigly bitrate, and enjoy everywhere!

Yeah, you’re correct. I just wonder if this USB turntable is going to be good enough. For the last few years I’ve wanted to rebuild my old Dual 1219, but it’s one of seemingly a thousand projects I haven’t gotten around to doing.

Jazz oboe is a thing?

Exactly. He’s part of Oregon a ‘World Music’ jazz-type group I’ve been following for well over 30 years; they were formed in 1970, and I’ve been listening to them since I first heard them on a community college Jazz station down in southern Orange County back when I was in high school. All of the members are incredibly talented - Ralph Towner on 12-string guitar and keyboards (where I first heard the awesome, warm tone of the Sequential Circuits Prophet V), Gle n Moore on bass and Paul McCandless on horns (oboe, bass clarinet, English horn, soprano saxo maphone) . Their original percussionist, Colin Wolcott, was killed in a traffic accident in East Germany in 1984, well before the wall fell. I guess those Trabbis aren’t the safest things to tool around in...
I have numerous solo albums by the other members of the group, but this is the first McCandless album I’ve ordered, and I wonder what kept me from doing so until now.
As a professional musician I figure that you will appreciate the unusual and eclectic nature of their work. Check out some of the live recordings as well as they’re equally impressive. You can proba bly tell from this assortment of videos that Crossing is probably one favorite albums, one I can listen to over and over, and I still get a great deal of enjoyment every time as w ell as feeling rather strong emotions whenever I listen to it.

The turntable in my setup hasn't been used in probably 25 years... I've been meaning to get around to rebuilding it, but I haven't had the time in the 5 or so years of owning it.

Exactly. I've got the tools and the manuals, all I'm lacking is time, motivation and energy...
